Berlin is locate in the north east of Germany, and is the capital of Brandenburg, a marshland territory. Berlin can hardly be described as a beautiful city, but does however, have some fine architecture and the collection of museums is unrivalled. At the heart of the former GDR, in the east, is the iconic Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) and with its historical significance is probably the ideal place to begin your visit to Berlin. Move on from there to the famous boulevard of Unter den Linden 'Under the Lime Trees') and the fabulous archaeological collections on the Museumsinsel. In the centre of the former West Berlin are the ritzy Ku'damm and the great artistic and musical institutions of the Kalturforum. The best bars, restaurants and nightlife can be found around Bahnhof Zoo. The suburbs are trendy happening districts with magnificent palaces and parks and quite diverse, ranging from densely populated parts such as Kreuzberg to vast rural landscapes of the Grunewald and the Havel lakes. Also, there are large tracts of Lakeland and forests waiting to be discovered. Your holiday would not be complete without a visit to Checkpoint Charlie, where the history of the Wall is told - photographs, films, homemade aircraft and converted cars are just some of the attractions. Moving further afield, why not visit one or two other towns and villages in the area? Potsdam, a garden city, was once the pride of the Prussian kingdom and now a fascinating combination of art and nature. The bi-annual national garden show, the Bundesgartenschau has bequeathed a legacy of new gardens, squares and promenades to the city while the Filmpark Babelsberg presents the city's cinematic past within a modern theme park. Brandenburg has a lovely setting on a series of islands in the river Havel, with fine medieval monuments. For a relaxing day out, why not enjoy a boat trip along the channels and canals through the forest at Spreewald. The cucumbers produced here are renowned and it's the perfect way to see the forest unlike any other in Germany.
