Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory is situated on Port Darwin, an inlet of the Timor Sea, accommodating 1660 square kilometers. Darwin is remotely situated of the north coast, which is sparsely settled, probably the reason there was no rail link until 2003, when the line to Adelaide was completed. Military personnel and their families account for the majority of the population of 103,500, but there are also a large number of Chinese and Aboriginals. Heavily bombed in the Second World War by the Japanese, Darwin was originally called Palmerston until 1911 when it was renamed after Charles Darwin who had stopped during his voyage in the Beagle. In 1974, Darwin was almost destroyed by a cyclone but has since recovered. It may now be the most multi cultural city in Australia and prides itself on ethnic diversity. You'll find a relaxed, cosmopolitan tropical atmosphere. Being closer to Jakarta and Singapore than Sydney and Melbourne may be the reason for its Asian influences. Despite being so remote, there's still lots to do, many within easy reach of the city. Only 40km to the south is the Crocodile Farm - home to 8,000 crocs and 140km south is the Litchfield National Park with its Tabletop Range, 4 waterfalls and even a campsite. The East Point Reserve is best visited in the afternoon when the wallabies come out. To learn more about life in the sea, visit the Indo Pacific Marine for an abundance of sealife. There you can also enjoy the Australian Pearling Exhibition. If you're looking for something to do indoors then the museum at Fannie Bay may be for you where you'll find a collection of Aboriginal Art. Mindil Beach Night Market is also worth a visit with much to see and do, any you will be likely to find that keepsake to take home. If you're heading to Adelaide next, the weekly train will allow you to enjoy the countryside along the way as you pass though Katherine then on to Alice Springs.
