Hannover is the capital of the province of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony to the English speaking!) Surrounded by beautiful buildings, the market square is at the heart of this ancient city. A statue of Roland can be found in front of the Town Hall, symbolising civic justice and strength. St Peter's Cathedral is also nearby. Hannover is a significant trading centre thanks to its location and transport and it is known as the Green Capital due to its open spaces and lakes. From the square, take the Kramerstrasse to see the historic timber-framed houses - only a few remaining examples of Old Hanover since the bombing during the Second World War. Don't miss the Herrenhauser Gardens, in the grounds of the Herrenhauser Castle, which are reputed to be among the finest in Europe. Or what about a visit to Serengeti-Park, a safari park, which is home to 600 species of animals, reptiles and fish? From here you have the choice to go north to Bremen, offering spectacular attractions and fine legacy of historic sights and on to Luneburger, the largest expanse of heathland in Europe with it's museum dedicated to heat, and nearby Heide Park Soltau offering a variety of trips such as monorail, narrow-gauge train boating and rafting, or east to Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Wienhausen.
Braunschweig is probably most associated with its prince, Heinrich der Lowe. He erected the bronze lion statue in the town square and the Burg Dankwarderode fortress. His body lies in a tomb in St Blasius' Cathedral, another building h was responsible for. Wolfsburg is home to Volkswagen and more importantly, the VW Beetle. Pop into the factory to see the cars being built - it's well worth it! If you find yourself on the B188 to Gifhorn, you will see some wonderful views and wildlife. In Wienhausen, arrange a guided tour of the Kloster and see the wooden Holy Sepulchre and the valuable tapestries, woven by nuns in the late 13th century. Enjoy exploring this wonderful part of Germany.
