Helsinki is the capital of Finland, which lies between Sweden and Russia and is home to 5 million people. Originally part of Sweden, then Russia, the Finns won independence in 1917 after the collapse of the Tsarist Russia. Helsinki is the centre of culture as well as economic and financial activity. In conjunction with the many parks and waterways, the 19th century architecture makes Helsinki an attractive city. The centre is built around the Etelasatama Harbour with the market on the waterfront at the heart of the city. Here you will find everything - try some of the local fish and pick up local souvenirs such as Sami dolls to take home. From here you can also take a boat trip to Suomenlinna Island just south of the harbour. During the Swedish empire, Suomenlinna was the great fortress to defend Russian attack. A visit to see the ramparts and cannons makes a nice day trip. For those travelling with children, the Linnanmaki Amusement Park should be included on the agenda along with a visit to Helsinki Zoo. It dates back to 1889 and is home to many animals from around the globe. For a peaceful afternoon, stroll through the botanical gardens and enjoy the "foreign" plants such as cacti and palms. Decide how to spend your evening while enjoying the Finnish specialities such as reindeer stew, pickled salmon or snow grouse at one of the excellent restaurants - vegetarian restaurants are second to none and the Russian restaurants are among the best. In the evening, the newly opened Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art is the venue for plays and concerts while the Seurasaari Open-air Museum hosts folk dancing with traditional costumes and local crafts such as embroidery. If you prefer ballet or opera, check the programme at the Opera House or sports lovers can watch an ice hockey match at the Olympic Stadium.
